INTERNATIONAL  NEWS (THEA643 0101-102) (Instructor: Yeşim Çaplı)

The main focus/objective of the course is to introduce the students with theoretical framework to understand international communication in the form of traditional news and today’s news media.  Not only theory but practicing different news items from different news media cover  the second half of the course day/time:  International News course deals with various examples of written and visual presses of  different countries about very recent crucial issues or happenings all over the world. Besides, major issues and events about Turkey which are also the concern or interest of other countries and the portrayal and/or representation of their news media reserve a special place and task within this course.  Today’s new news media covers bloggers, different news sites on the internet and also citizen journalism as an another practice of news reporting.  Most of the recent events are portrayed both  in the traditional news media and in the new internet news media such as Gezi Parkı, Arab Spring, Assasination of Leaders in countries. The differences between different news media tools both software (content) and hardware (the technology) and the general ideology of international news reporting will be compared in class by various examples and events in Turkey and abroad.

New  communication technologies and practices have always been central to the maintenance of social, economic and political relations among social groups who differentiate themselves from one another other according to language, custom, geography, religion, state borders. The explosion of new media technologies that can transverse such boundaries has made understanding global commnications systems a centerpiece for diplomacy, economic transactions, and political debate. Therefore, the secondary focus/objective of the course is to analyse the structure of global/international communication systems among different countries. This course attempts to provide as a basic grounding in these global news systems as they constitute, represent, and influence international relations and politics. MEDIA ECONOMICS (THEA643 0301-302) (Instructor : Yeşim Çaplı)

Media Economics course focuses on the economic environment in which media operate, and discusses the main actors/forces that shape media, market and consumer attitute in a very changing climate of media technology. The course aims to reveal the marketing roles under different ownership and its effects on media content and function today and in future. Media Economics course seeks to review and analyse a range of different media markets around the world,  and the media market operations referring to previous and recent periods.  Not only economic factors/policies but also political reasons/policies have helped to shape today’s world media and the markets

This course also introduces several perspectives from which scholars and media practioners sought to explain how media -a very popular term used by anyone in everyday life- generate meaning and power. Mediaeconomics is a course to examine media dynamics from production to distribution  stages within the nations’ own dynamics. Through expansion, privatization and convergence, the world’s media markets are undergoing fundamental shifts. These changes are global and driven by economic and political factors and policies. The course gives great emphasis to ‘Traditional Media’ and today’s ‘New Media’processes:  Welcome to convergence culture, where old and new media collide, where grassroots and corporate media intersect, where the power of the media producer and the power of the media

important story gets told, every brand gets sold, and every consumer gets courted across multiple media platforms

The course seeks to review and analyse a range of media markets (internet business, broadcast industry, film, music and print industries) all around the world. Special emphasis will also be given to explore the previous and current media sector in Turkey.
